SAN FRANCISCO, CA – 06-27-2018 (Press Release Jet) — The Mission, a veteran-led media company, is announcing its first funding round led by Pathfinder, Founders Fund’s early stage investment vehicle. The Mission creates and publishes stories, podcasts, and shows like The Mission Daily. Many of them are sponsored by technology companies like Salesforce.
The Founder and CEO is Chad Grills, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq before becoming a writer and moving into technology and media.
“The average American consumes 9 hours of media each day, and the majority of it spreads fear, uncertainty, and doubt,” said Grills. “We’re changing that.”
Founders Fund has invested in Airbnb, Lyft, Palantir, SpaceX, Spotify, Stripe, Wish, and dozens of other successful technology companies.
Grills credits The Mission’s early success to a growing movement of people and enterprise sponsors eager to explore how they can improve their lives and the lives of those around them.
“We create stories designed to uplift,” said Grills. “Our audience is made up of smart people who want to get even smarter. We provide them a daily newsletter and podcasts packed with value, original stories, news that matters, and scientific studies designed to empower.”
In Silicon Valley, it has become a cliche that media startups or original content studios can’t make money or IPO. Grills says that this is true for most media companies, but says The Mission is closer to a technology company than a media company.
“I started by doing what I love, which is writing and developing dozens of series, shows, and worlds. All of them are designed to last. Now we’re partnering with technology companies so they can sponsor the ones that are the best fit for them,” said Grills. “Our early enterprise clients include Salesforce, and we’re excited to continue working with other mission-driven sponsors on all the original content, podcasts, and shows we’re creating. Ultimately, we are creating corporate mythology for the companies that we see as being a force for good in the world.”
The Mission reaches millions of people each month, runs the largest active publication on Medium, and publishes a daily newsletter and podcast that reach hundreds of thousands of people each day.
